The Science Behind the Score
What We Measure
Your photogenic score is calculated from weighted dimensions based on research into facial perception:
- Facial Symmetry (High Weight) — How similar your left and right sides are. Higher symmetry generally photographs better across more angles.
- Feature Proportions (High Weight) — The relationship between your facial features—eye spacing, nose-to-mouth ratio, forehead-to-chin balance.
- Bone Structure (Medium Weight) — Cheekbone prominence, jawline definition, and how these features catch light and create depth.
- Expression Quality (Medium Weight) — Whether your expression appears natural and engaged, including subtle markers of genuine emotion.
- Technical Factors (Contextual) — Camera angle, potential distortion, lighting effects—factors that affect how your features are captured rather than the features themselves.
What We Don't Measure
GoodSide isn't trying to rate "attractiveness"—that's subjective and culturally variable. We measure specific, objective factors that affect how well features translate to 2D images. Someone can be beautiful but not photograph well, or vice versa.
